Thompson Enamel Thinning Oil No. 5 (Mixing Medium) 50ml.
This Thinning oil is the essential liquid medium used to transform dry enamel powder into a smooth, workable paint consistency for specialized enameling techniques. This medium is ideal for fine detail work, sgraffito painting, and traditional wet inlay methods. (Non-toxic when applied)
Provides the ideal viscosity for mixing enamels to be applied with a brush, pen, or syringe. The oil dries slowly, giving the artist ample working time for complex and delicate details, shading, and blending techniques before the piece is ready for firing. Formulated to fully vaporize during the firing process without leaving carbon residue, ensuring your colors remain clear, brilliant, and free of defects. Recommended for use with almost all Thompson (or similar) transparent and opaque powdered enamels.
RECOMMENDED APLICATIONS:
Enamel Painting: Mix with finely ground enamel powder to create a paint suitable for detailed brushwork and shading on top of fired enamel bases.
Sgraffito: Create a thicker mixture that can be applied to the base, allowing design lines to be scratched through the wet enamel layer to expose the metal beneath.
Wet Inlay: Use as a binder for wet-packing fine cloisonné cells or filling small depressions in the metal.
USAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Preparation: Place a small amount of clean, dry enamel powder (preferably sifted) onto a glass palette or mortar.
Mixing: Slowly add drops of Thinning Oil No. 5 to the enamel powder. Mix thoroughly with a palette knife or spatula until the desired smooth, creamy consistency is achieved. The consistency should be similar to acrylic paint.
Application: Apply the mixed enamel paint using a fine brush, quill, or syringe.
Drying: Allow the piece to dry completely (this may take several hours, depending on humidity and layer thickness) until the oil has evaporated and the enamel powder is securely held.
Firing: Fire the piece in the kiln according to the standard temperature and time for your chosen enamel type. The oil will burn out cleanly, leaving only the fused enamel glass.
